Gem Cartson

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I am Gemma, please call me Gem.

I am based in Kaiapoi. I cover from north Christchurch suburbs to most North Canterbury towns.

I was inspired to become a midwife as a young mum in my late teens with an unexpected pregnancy I discovered at 20 weeks! I had a caring, non judgmental and understanding midwife and when I returned to her as a client later on, she had a fantastic student midwife who inspired me to pursue this fabulous career. I had my third child many years later while studying to become a midwife in the middle of a global pandemic.

I take an individualised approach and provide antenatal, labour, birth, and postnatal care based on informed choice. I feel privileged to be selected to work with families at such a pivotal time in their lives. I see birth as a physiological normal event and aim for natural birth however, I balance this with evidence based practice and recognise that sometimes medical intervention is required and am happy to support this. I aim to provide care based on partnership and women led care.

Antenatally, my clinic is held on a Friday at Rangiora Health Hub.- there may be allowance for home antenatal care- please contact me to discuss this.

I provide birth care at St Georges, Rangiora, Home and Christchurch Women’s when clinically indicated. Postnatally, I will see you at home for up to 6 weeks after your birth.

When I am off call, my practice partners cover me so you have 24/7 urgent care available to you and we all work similarly. I am available from the end of May 2023 - if you’d like to book with me before then, please make contact and I will have one of my practice partners care for you until I am able to. I currently have spaces from May- November

Having a supportive midwife meant I was able to have positive birth experiences and I hope to be able to pass this on to women and their whanau.
